👋 Hi FingalEMers,
It’s another packed week across Fingal East, with 🚴♀️ National Bike Week and ☀️ Dublin Climate Action Week 2026 taking place and 🐷 The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival getting underway on the Donabate and Portrane peninsula.
In fact, there is so much happening locally this week that we simply couldn’t fit our usual “Things We Like in Fingal East” section into this edition. It’s a nice problem to have, but it does show just how busy the local calendar has become.
So, from the week after next (25th-31st May), we’ll be moving to two editions per week. We asked you about this before, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, with more than 90% in favour.
The aim is simple: shorter, easier-to-read editions, more room for local events, and a better chance of making sure good things happening across Fingal East don’t get missed.
Now to our poll; with the Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival getting underway in Donabate and Portrane, we’d love to know how familiar people are with it.
Have you been before, are you planning to go this year, or is this your first time hearing about it?
How familiar are you with the Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival?
If you know of an upcoming event or a local story worth sharing, drop us a line & we’ll help spread the word with our fast-growing community: [email protected]
The sponsor of this week’s edition is:
This week’s sponsor is a real favourite of ours: Empoli Restaurant in Swords.
Empoli has advertised with us before, and we’re delighted to welcome them back. They’re a much-loved Mediterranean spot with a strong Italian focus — the kind of place you can rely on for a relaxed meal, friendly service, and consistently tasty food.
They’re also a great shout for groups and special occasions, with a team that genuinely takes pride in how they look after people.
If you’re planning a catch-up, family meal, or night out locally, Empoli is well worth a visit — warm, welcoming, and always a good feed.
Don’t forget to tell April and the team you're a FingalEMer!

🎨 🌊 New Creative Strategy and Funding Scheme Launched for Balbriggan
- Fingal Arts Office has launched a new Creative Places Balbriggan Strategy for 2026–2027, alongside a new funding scheme called Making Waves. The aim is to make the arts more accessible across Balbriggan by supporting community-led creative activity and giving local groups more opportunities to work directly with artists. For a town with such a strong mix of cultures, ages and community energy, this feels like another important step in building Balbriggan’s creative identity.
- The new strategy is built around three main themes: Creative Youth, Creative Industry and Climate Action. Speaking at the launch in The Lark Concert Hall, Mayor of Fingal Cllr Tom O’Leary highlighted Balbriggan’s growing arts scene and pointed in particular to the importance of young people, with Balbriggan described as Ireland’s youngest large town and roughly a third of its population under 18. Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly also connected the strategy to wider plans for the town, including public art projects, planned studio spaces at 2–4 Dublin Street and Balbriggan’s role as Fingal’s Decarbonising Zone.
- The practical piece for local groups is the Making Waves Seed Funding Scheme, which will support creative programmes where community members work collaboratively with an artist to develop new ideas, skills and activities. Funding of up to €5,000 per applicant is available, with applications open from Tuesday 5 May until Friday 26 June 2026. The scheme is open to individual artists, community groups and community organisations based in Balbriggan, as well as artists from outside the town who are willing to work with a Balbriggan community group.
🧪 🏆 De La Salle Students Take Top Prize at SciFest@DkIT 2026
- De La Salle College students Breffni Tuomey Lynch, Conor Douglas and Conn Sheridan were named the overall winners at SciFest@DkIT 2026, taking home the SciFest Best Project Award for their project, Under the Shell: The Hidden Effects of Sewage on Coastal Life. The event, held on the Dundalk Institute of Technology campus, brought together students from across the North Leinster and South Ulster region and formed part of SciFest’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
- This year’s competition showed just how much depth there is in school-level science, with over 273 students from 21 schools presenting 132 projects across a wide range of subjects, from environmental science and engineering to health, technology, social science and space. There were 23 awards in total, including prizes supported by organisations such as Regeneron, EirGrid, Intel, Boston Scientific, ESERO and the Irish Science Teachers’ Association.
- There was also a strong Fingal East connection. Maedhbh Gibbons from Ardgillan Community College won the SciFest Communications Award for her project on soil salinity and plant growth, while another Ardgillan team won the SciFest Maths in Science Award for work on exam language demands and grade distributions. Lusk Community College also featured strongly, with Isabel Mullally and Hannah Lyons winning the Keenova STEM Excellence Award for a project on generative AI and creativity, while Maria Renduda and Emilia Vichareva won Best Intermediate Project in the DkIT Awards for Behind the Mask: The Molecular Truth of Hair Restoration.
