👋 Hi FingalEMers,

Welcome to this week’s Fingal East Media. We have a busy one for you, with local events, road changes, community updates, Malahide Castle concerts, a look ahead to Lusk Summer Festival, and Mary Coughlan & Ultan Conlon in Swords as our featured event.

Last week’s poll was about whether readers would be interested in eating-out discounts from local restaurants and cafés — and it really reinforced what we had already been hearing. 65% said yes, while another 27% said it would depend on the deal. So it looks like the appetite is there, provided the offers are genuinely useful and local.

This week also marks a few important moments in the calendar: Pride Month, celebrating LGBTQ+ equality; Volunteers’ Week, which ends on 7 June and recognises the people who give their time to local groups and community life; and World Oceans Day on 8 June, a timely reminder of how lucky we are to live beside such a beautiful coastline.

And this week’s poll is a quick one: should we include selected Dublin city centre events in the newsletter, or keep the focus strictly on Fingal East? Let us know what you think.

The sponsor of this week’s edition is:

La Boulangerie Française — a little slice of France in Applewood

Based in Applewood Village, Swords, La Boulangerie Française is a much-loved local French bakery, café and delicatessen, known for freshly baked bread, croissants, pastries, cakes, coffee, lunches and savoury treats. It is the kind of place that feels like a proper local find — warm, welcoming and full of those little things that make a morning coffee, weekend treat or quick lunch feel a bit special.

Whether you are picking up fresh bread, choosing something sweet, grabbing a bite, or ordering for a family gathering or celebration, it is a lovely Applewood spot to keep in mind.

And don’t forget to tell them you’re a FingalEMer.

🎤🎵 Malahide Castle gears up for a busy June concert run

Malahide Castle is set for another big summer run this June, with eight outdoor concerts scheduled across the month. The castle grounds have become one of North Dublin’s best-known summer music venues, with a concert history stretching back over two decades: Andrea Bocelli performed there in 2005, while the modern run of large outdoor summer gigs really took shape from 2007, with acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Pink, Joe Cocker, Al Green and Bell X1 helping to establish Malahide as a major concert setting.

This year’s concerts are:

• Wednesday 10 JuneNick Cave & The Bad Seeds

• Saturday 13 JuneKingfishrSold out

• Saturday 20 JuneKodaline

• Tuesday 23 JuneTeddy Swims

• Wednesday 24 JuneKaty Perry

• Saturday 27 JuneMichael Bublé

• Sunday 28 JuneCalvin Harris

• Tuesday 30 JuneMaroon 5

For Malahide and the wider Fingal East area, the concerts bring both a great local buzz and the usual pressure on roads, parking and public transport. With thousands expected for each show, local traffic plans and post-concert road closures will be part of the month, so anyone heading along — or travelling through Malahide on concert evenings — should plan ahead, allow extra time, and keep an eye on public transport arrangements.

🌱🏘️ Fingal communities get €1.3m climate action boost

Fingal County Council has announced a €1.3 million Community Climate Action Programme fund, aimed at helping local community groups, sports clubs, youth clubs and other organisations deliver practical projects that reduce emissions in their own areas. The funding forms part of the wider push to build low-carbon communities, with 55 applications approved from 75 received before the December deadline.

The successful projects cover a wide mix of everyday climate actions, including solar panels, battery systems, insulation, new doors and windows, LED lighting upgrades, bike parking, repair access, composting, local swap initiatives and fashion upcycling. Fingal examples mentioned include Skerries Sea Scouts, Balbriggan Meals on Wheels, River Valley Community Centre, St. Finian’s GAA and Fingallians GAA, showing how the programme reaches across both coastal and inland communities.

For Fingal East, the main point is that climate action is no longer just a large-scale national issue; it is increasingly happening through local clubs, centres and volunteer-led groups. Fingal’s first phase of the programme delivered 160 separate climate actions, and this new round should help more community buildings, shared spaces and local projects become cheaper to run, more energy efficient and better prepared for the future.
